Introduction

This page of the documentation provides a quick start guide to create a project in OpenStack. For more in-depth documentation refer to the links on the left hand side.

Quick Start

Project Short ID

Please note that the project's short identifier is used for the DNS Zone associated with the project. Only lowercase characters, numbers and hyphens are accepted.

Create a project by heading to the SD-Tool. Create a new OpenStack project by providing the name and short-identifier. Afterwards, grant access for additional users to the project using the SD-Tool.

Users are either added as administrative or regular users. Note that the distinction between administrative and normal user only has meaning on the SD tool side. Admin users may add additional users and manage the project in the SD tool, but regular users cannot. Users in Openstack have the same rights regardless of their assignment in the SD tool.

An email is sent when the project is ready to use. Sign in to the OpenStack Dashboard and start creating Instances.

Note

Students cannot create OpenStack projects. If you are a student and want to use the OpenStack cloud infrastructure, you need a professor or faculty member to create the project for you. After creation you will have full access to your project's resources.

Video Guides

You may also be interested in the video guides down below. The first guide walks you through the process of creating your first instance and connecting to it. The second video is from a Lunch-Talk by Michael von RĂ¼den and focuses on automation tools and OpenStack.

Contact

When facing issues regarding OpenStack or more resources are required for a project feel free to use the options below to contact the h_da cloud team. If access to the instance is lost first look into the instance rescue section to find ways to resolve the problem.

Joining the Matrix Group

Use this quick guide to join the Matrix group if you are not that familiar with the Matrix chat system. If you have never logged in, head over to chat.fbi.h-da.de, here the Matrix home server will be preselected for you, as the Matrix Group link above will direct you to the general matrix server. A more in-depth guide for matrix and the element chat client can be found here.

<

When logged in, click on the + icon next to Rooms and select Explore public rooms from the dropdown.

In the popup you might need to select the fbi matrix server from the dropdown right under the search field to only show h_da rooms instead of every public room. The h_da.cloud User Group should already be visible. Click join and start chatting.

  • RBAC shared security groups are only assignable using the CLI Bug #2011547

Note

Any issues regarding MTU and/or Docker networking have been resolved. The same is true for issues with volume performance. When experiencing any problems in this space, please let us know.
